Trading Standards Email Alert Monday 20th December 2010

20/12/2010 Phishing Scams

A phishing email has been brought to our attention. Phishing emails are sent by criminal gangs who attempt to impersonate legitimate companies. The emails they send always ask the recipient to click on a link and visit a bogus website to input personal or financial information. This is then taken and used fraudulently.

The email in this case falsely purports to come from paypal and encourages the recipient to 'dispute' the payment of subscription by clicking on a link in the email and visiting what will turn out to be a bogus website.

20/12/2010 Bogus Letters

Residents are warned to not respond in any way to bogus letters, received by some Warwickshire residents, that may have originated in China. The letters claim that the recipients have the same surname as an individual who has an estate worth millions and in order to remove the funds from the country, the sender is willing to spilt the funds! This is an old but elaborate hoax and those that do contact the sender will only be asked for money to help with the 'transfer' of the non existent funds.

Warwickshire Trading Standards Email Alert Thursday 16th December 2010

16/12/2010 Artists Work Worth Not a Lot!Warwickshire residents are warned to beware of door to door sales people selling paintings in the Dunchurch area and across the County. The sellers say they are Israeli art students and claim they have produced the paintings themselves and are selling them to householders to raise money for their tuition fees. The paintings are being sold for several hundred pounds each but it appears these are not students at all and the paintings are mass produced in China and are worth a few pounds. It is reported that a Dunchurch area resident paid £350 for a painting. This scam is reported to be happening across Coventry and Warwickshire.

16/12/2010 Loan Scam
Residents have reported receiving unexpected phone calls from a man claiming they were £1000 in debt with a Tesco loan. The recipients did not have a loan with Tescos or any other business and put the phone down. The callers number was recorded (an 0843 no.) and it appears to be related to a number of cold calling and automated message phone calls that other residents have been complaining about in recent months. These calls seem to originate from outside the UK and relate to paying off debt or other marketing/survey/sales information. It is understood that these calls are not in any way linked to Tescos.

Recipients of such calls are advised to put the phone down immediately and never to divulge any personal or financial information.

Pre-Christmas advice from Warwickshire Police includes:

*Do not leave gifts unattended in your car when shopping

*Do not hide your Christmas presents in your car, garden shed or in the garage where a burglar can easily break in and steal them

*Don't let someone else enjoy Christmas at your expense, please keep Christmas presents out of view of opportunist burglars until Christmas morning - it is not just the children you need to hide the presents from

*Your Christmas tree looks lovely in the window with it’s twinkling lights. But leaving the curtains open enables burglars to look inside your house to see what there is to steal. Keep the curtains closed at night time

*If you go out remember to leave some lights on to give the impression that someone is at home. Invest in a timer switch so that lights come on and off at different times to deter thieves and save energy

*Leave a radio, tuned to a talk station, playing when you go out. A burglar is less likely to break in if they can hear voices inside.

Rural Theft

Between 2pm on Sunday 5th December and 12 midday on Tuesday 7th Decemebr2010, thieves broke into an unoccupied house in the Snowford Hill area of Long Itchington. Various items were stolen including a Hayter Lawnmower and Stihl Strimmer.

If you saw anything suspicious during this period or have been offered either of the items listed above, please contact Southam Police quoting Incident Number 137 - 07.12.10.

Crime Prevention advice:

Perimeter - Keep your hedges, fences and gates in good repair. Ditches form a natural barrier. Fit gates with capping hinges so they cannot be removed easily. Consider perimeter detection systems.

Tools/Machinery - Record the make and serial number of items. Mark or stamp easily removed items with your postcode, followed by the first two letters of your farm’s name, or other identifying marks. Consider making a secure cage or structure for more valuable items, which should be sited within a secure and alarmed building. Also consider forensic marking products.

Fuel – Ideally locate fuel tanks in an overlooked area away from main roads. Pumps should have locking devices and/or isolator switches. Also consider a fuel tank alarm.

Animal - Check animals regularly. Consider marking your animals in a way which would make them identifiable. Keep photographs of valuable animals.

If you have any information about this incident please e-mail 'southamfarmwatch@warwickshire.pnn.police.uk' or please ring 01926 415000 and ask for the Communications Centre. Please tell them that you are ringing in in response to a message
