A burglary took place at Rollason Engineering Ltd, Moreton Morrell last night (22.2.11). 4 brand new and 2 second hand quad bikes were stolen along with 28 brand new items of garden machinery. The quads are branded Suzuki and the garden machinery is branded Mitox. If anybody is offered anything from these brands please call Charlie on 07831 331589.

Beware: Cold Calling Alarm Sellers in the Vicinity

The Trading Standards Service has had brought to its attention telephone cold calls from an alarm sales company offering external alarms at £1.00. Residents should be aware that this sort of approach, which can be accompanied by a high pressure sales pitch, loads the cost of the alarm system on to its fitting and monitoring. This can lead to consumers purchasing unsuitable alarm systems that cost many thousands of pounds to run.
If you do sign a contract in your home following an unsolicited visit, or a visit arranged following an unsolicited phone call, you have 7 days within which to cancel the contract.

Kenilworth Bogus Caller

Warwickshire Trading Standards Service today received a report about a man acting strangely in the Kenilworth area. He is reported to have cold called at the properties of two elderly people and asked to examine their lofts. He did not give an explanation for this request but does falsely claim to be working for the council. The man was dressed in all black (with a hood), about 5 ft 9" tall and wearing a backpack. The approach could be someone trying to sell loft insulation or might be a distraction burglary attempt.

Schools and other organisations are warned to beware of bogus calls from publishing companies falsely claiming to represent St. James’ Palace, Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service has announced. Trading Standards Officers have received complaints that Warwickshire schools have been cold called by an as yet unknown company selling advertising space in a leaflet for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
The bogus callers are falsely claiming to be phoning from St. James Palace and are offering advertising space at the cost of £3,400. Warwickshire Trading Standards Service can confirm that these approaches are in no way associated with St. James Palace or Her Majesty’s official Jubilee celebrations.
Rogue publishing companies use high pressure sales techniques to sell advertising space in publications that have very small (if any) circulation. People who take advertising but don’t pay up are then usually chased for payment using very aggressive techniques and threats. Rogue companies will use national events such as the Diamond Jubilee, Royal Wedding or Olympic Games to sell their bogus advertising.
Trading Standards Officers are warning organisations and businesses to take adequate precautions to ensure that staff members of aware of the practices of rogue publishers and don’t fall for their tricks.
· Register with the telephone preference service: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/
· Circulate information to members of staff who take external calls.
· Audit your systems/procedures for invoicing and payment to satisfy yourself that you are adequately protected from practices of this nature.

Hit and run in Fenny Compton
Just after 4 this afternoon a pony was hit from behind by a vehicle described as a silver Hi-Lux. The young rider fell onto the bonnet of the vehicle and then to the ground.

Burglary - vehicle sought (White van VU57
Update on recent burglary and a vehicle to watch out for.
At 11.15am yesterday morning, 1st February, a witness saw a male offender forcing open the kitchen window of a cottage home in Mill Lane, Halford.
Once inside the house the offender carried out a tidy search of the ground floor and stole a large quantity of silver.
The offender then made an untidy search of the bedrooms and stole a large quantity of jewellery. A pillowcase from the cottage was used, by the offender, to carry the stolen items from the scene.
The offender is described as a white male aged around 20 years. He wore a skyblue baseball cap, a checked jacket, jeans and trainers. He was unshaven and was seen at around 11am carrying a green shopping bag.
The offender made off in a small white van which was driven by an older male. The partial registration number of the van is VU57.
Please remain alert and actively on the lookout for this vehicle around your area.
Please report anything unusual or of concern to police, quoting Incident No. 133 of 01.02.11.

Charities Collection Bags
Air Ambulance, Various Cancer and Heart Research charities etc
During a conversation with the Air Ambulance collections driver recently, he told me that he had to start work at 0730hrs in an attempt to prevent thieves from taking the bags which had been left on doorsteps for him.
Despite this he actually caught a female in the act and she surrendered the bag she was holding and several others from the back seat of her car. This occurred in Pillerton Priors about 1100hrs 31/1/11.
He noted the car number and colour and other details which I have passed on to our local police officers within minutes of our conversation.
My experience is that genuine collectors use a van of some sort, usually a large one.
Some of the genuine vans have a logo on them and others do not; and to date I have never seen a private vehicle being used for collections purposes. Given the area that genuine charities cover and the number and weight and volume of these bags I think it unlikely that any private saloon or hatchback would be equal to the task.
So, I will take a chance and report any private vehicle registration number and a description of the driver etc, that I see being used for collecting charity bags.
My first call will be to 999 and I will back this up by a second call to our local officers on 01789 444600.

Once inside, the offenders carried out an untidy search of the office before making off with a quantity of cash and they keys for a vehicle which was awaiting an MOT.

Throughout February, Warwickshire consumers are being urged to ‘bin a scam’ in support of ‘Scamnesty’, the national month long scams awareness campaign, Warwickshire Trading Standards Service has announced.
‘Scamnesty bins’, located at main libraries and one stop shops across Warwickshire will be available throughout the month for residents to bin their bogus prize draws and sweepstakes, scam lotteries and advanced fee fraud letters. Trading Standards Officers will then collect the bins, identify issues and then shred them!

Crime in your street
You have probably seen that a new website has been launched to show the local crime stats for the last month. Just go to http://www.police.uk/ and type on your postcode. When I tried it I found a couple of, presumably, shoplifting incidents at the Coop.
