Illegal Raves

Dear Watch Member,
Officers are appealing to countryside dwellers to help them keep raves out of the county this weekend.
With the bank holiday approaching, now is the time for organisers of unlicensed music events to set about searching for venues in rural areas.
Police are determined to maintain their robust approach to raves – but would welcome any support from rural communities.
Anyone who notices any suspicious activity around farmland or large open spaces to report it.
How YOU can help:-
    • landowners should check vulnerable locations and make sure proper security arrangements are in place
    • check on previous known location for raves to ensure that lightning isn’t looking to strike twice
    • be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity in your community – is someone sizing up a location, has someone been testing out security measures such as fences or gates for access points, is a vehicle you do not recognise repeatedly driving around a certain area?
Tell-tale signs of a possible rave being organised:-
    • posters or messages advertising an event
    • locks and chains on fields cut or tampered with
    • large convoys of cars on quiet rural roads
    • sound equipment and tents being set up
    • power generators being hired and brought into rural locations
    • flattened or disturbed hedgerows
Any organised event at a rural locations, requires an appropriate license for entertainment and for any alcohol sales as well.
Also landowners permission!

25/05/2011: SKY Digital TV Extended Warranty Insurance Scam

Warwickshire Trading Standards has been alerted to the re-emergence of a telephone cold calling scam involving the sale of extended warranties. This scam has been circulating for several years.

Consumers have reported receiving hoax calls from businesses who falsely claim they either are, or are affiliated to, SKY TV. The callers are high pressure sales people who use prepared sales scripts to encourage consumers to take out extended and often expensive warranties for their Sky TV digital equipment.

The businesses have no connection to SKY TV but use opening phrases such as "I'm calling about your SKY TV service" or "I'm calling because your SKY warranty is due for renewal" to make consumers think they are calling on behalf of SKY. In fact they are trying to sell their own extended warranty products. Some may even falsely call themselves 'Sky Protect', (Sky's own genuine extended warranty protection plan) in order to mislead consumers and get a sale.

The callers then ask for your bank account details or in some cases your debit card details to set up withdrawals from your account. Consumers have reported difficulty in stopping these withdrawals once they begin.

The callers don't always know if you have SKY before they phone, their calls are generally random.

The extended warranty costs charged by these companies can range from £50 per year to over £170. Monthly direct debits are often set up. Trading Standards Officers advise consumers to consider carefully the cost of any extended warranty against the cost of replacing the item yourself if anything went wrong.

Officers also strongly advises consumers never to provide their personal or financial information to anyone who cold calls. If you think a call is genuine, ask to phone the business back on a publically listed telephone number (for example listed in the telephone directory).

SKY makes it clear on their website that the only extended warranty cover they offer is Sky Protect, provided by Domestic and General Services Ltd. However, Trading Standards Officers understand that some hoax callers may claim they are Sky Protect when they are not.

Consumers wishing to complain should contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

Crime advice websites - LINKS

Form time to time I have recommended various websites that contain information to keep you safe in one way or another. These sites will usually feature scams that are at least national and often international problems.

As this site is dedicated to this little corner of Warwickshire I will no longer feature such information as it is a duplication of effort. I will however add such sites to the LINKS area to the right and you can check them out and subscribe as you see fit.

Nevertheless if there is a pattern of local people being targeted then I will bring that to you attention through this blog.

Rural Broadband too slow?

Dear All

You may recall that an issue was raised at the Henley/Studley Community Forum relating to the lack of fast broadband in the area.

Warwickshire County Council, in partnership with Coventry City Council, Solihull Borough Council and the CW Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) want to bid for government funding to see high-speed broadband delivered to every part of the sub-region.

But, to do this, evidence is needed to show how current broadband provision is working, or not working, for business and individuals locally.  The bid will only be successful if it demonstrates that families, businesses and communities in all areas of the sub-region areas want and need faster broadband.

For more information on how you can register your details now and be a part of better broadband for Warwickshire, please use the following link:            www.warwickshire.gov.uk/superfastbroadband

Your information can be submitted until the end of June and the bid will be submitted in July

Cycle stolen in Farnborough

The cycle was stolen last Friday (20th May) from beside the village hall.

Seen at a similar time were two men described as ‘Eastern European’ in appearance driving a white van.

The bike is a ‘shopper’ style ladies model, red frame, 3 gears and a stand.

Would everyone please be aware of strangers behaving strangely and record details ie VRN in this case that could be useful at a later time. We may not be able to provide the police with a suspect's name and address but enough separate pieces of a jig-saw puzzle can be as effective.

Trading Standards Update -19/05/2011

19/05/2011 Fraud Letters Alert
Warwickshire Trading Standards Service has received a number of reports from residents concerning fraud letters they have received in the post or via email.

One purports to come from a 'Mr David Zhou' who claims to be a Chinese banker with access to $10 million dollars sitting in the account of the now 'deceased' Mr Alfred Rook. His offer to you is that he can arrange for the 'money' to be willed to you so it can be moved out of the country, at which point Mr Zhou will split the pot 50/50.

Another is a letter claiming to be from a 'Mrs Toni Adams', who says she is dying and wants to make you the beneficiary of her late husbands $8.7 million dollar estate to be used for good works.

These bogus pitches for your help are one of the oldest scams in the book, but one which still catches unsuspecting people every year, often very vulnerable people. Those who do respond are quickly asked for money to help the transfer of funds along. In some cases people have lost their whole life savings to this sort of scam.

Although many of these letters are posted in the UK, the criminal gangs that operate these scams are usually located abroad.

Never respond to these bogus offers. You can only lose money and may be targeted further.

For more information, visit our website: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/tradingstandards

Date:

From:

Reference:
A2/CMS/1630/11
Message:
We are really pleased to announce that the independent charity Crimestoppers are helping us further in our search for Mr Anxiang Du by offering a reward of up to £10,000 for anyone providing information to Crimestoppers leading to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons linked to the murders of the DING family.
Information can be passed to Crimestoppers in a number of ways:
o 0800 555 111
o www.crimestoppers-uk.org <http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/>
o Information can be provided anonymously
o Only information given to Crimestoppers will be eligible
Links to Crimestoppers web-site are also available on the front page of our website www.northants.police.uk <http://www.northants.police.uk/>
Detective Superintendent Glyn Timmins said
“We welcome the support of Crimestoppers and are very grateful that they have offered this sum of money. People are motivated by different things and we hope that a financial incentive will encourage someone to tell us when Mr Du is hiding”
The investigation remains ongoing with the objective being to build sufficient evidence in order to convict the right person of the murders of the Ding family. Investigators are encouraged by a sighting of a man matching the description of the prime suspect Mr Anxiang Du caught on CCTV in Venebles Street, off the Edgeware road in London – which is where the car was found.
The CCTV footage captured an image of a man in a brown coat, carrying a bag with a white cap at 2.27 am on Saturday 30 April, matching that of the outfit known to be worn by Mr Du the previous day.
This sighting is approximately four hours after the confirmed sighting of the car at a service station in Northampton.
We would like to remind everyone that this is the early hours of the morning following the royal wedding.
D/Supt Timmins appealed for communities to be his eyes and ears
“Our objective is to gather sufficient evidence to convict and therefore we also call to people of Wootton and surrounding areas to come forward if they think they saw Mr Du en-route to, or in Wootton village, including those who got on the number 15 bus from Greyfriars to Wootton at 1.30 on Friday 29th April.
“Any information however small could be of great help as we build the picture of what happened that afternoon.”

Credit Card Fraud the sequel - Cloned again

I have just had my card details cloned for the second time in as many months. Fortunately the bank picked it up on both occasions so I haven't been left out of pocket but I have learnt a little about the way it all works. Having spoken to Trading Standards who transferred me to Consumer Direct who gave me the number to call Action Fraud (0300 123 2040) I finally got some sensible answers.
Apparently once the bank pick up the fraud there is no further action required by the consumer; they will collect the information and see if a particular business has a pattern of fraud and then they will pass this information to the police.
They also advised me to have a look at the CardWatch website which has a mine of information on the safe use of credit cards.

Rural Crime Update for April

Date:
10 May 2011
To:
All farm and rural contacts
From:
Local Marketing Team on behalf of Claire Salmon, the Force Countryside & Wildlife Officer
Reference:
A2/CMS/1559/11
Message:
Welcome to a rural crime update from your local Wildlife and Countryside Liaison Officer, PC Claire Salmon.
We are seeing an increase in the number of rural incidents, and April in particular saw an increase in the theft of motor vehicles including two tractors, two telehandlers, three ATVs (all Kubota RTV 900s) and two quad bikes.
Other incidents reported in April across Northamptonshire include:
Theft/attempted theft of:
    • an aluminium body horsebox
    • 2 HGV/ lorries from farms
    • 2 Daihatsu Fourtraks
    • Mitsubishi L200 pick up truck and a Range Rover
    • Various items of tack
    • Ifor Williams HB505 horse trailer, a triple axle cattle trailer, 2 flatbed trailers and attempted theft of a box trailer
    • a red Haybob hay turner
    • heating oil storage tanks and fuel stolen from vehicles
Scrap metal theft is still an issue. Recent reports include theft/damage to two sets of ring rollers, theft of 14 x 50 kilo tractor weights, and reports of scrap metal being taken from farms/yards and lead theft from the roofs of buildings.
Several reports have been received about the theft of tools such as chainsaws, generators and gardening equipment from sheds and barns, and poultry has also been targeted.
Please remember to keep your vehicles and equipment out of sight wherever possible, preferably somewhere which is secure and alarmed. Always secure your vehicle, even if left unattended for a few minutes as thefts of this kind are a common occurrence.
On a brighter note, two people have been arrested for offences and some of the items listed above have since been recovered.

Trading Standards Update -11/05/2011

10/05/2011 Newstone Premier Driveways
Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service would like to draw Warwickshire householder’s attention to a business that is using an incorrect address on its advertising.

Newstone Premier Driveways has been carrying out tarmac work and block paving in the Leamington Spa and Kenilworth areas.

The business has been advertising its address, both on signs displayed around the area and on paper work supplied to customers, as 23 Siddaway House, Rugby.

Warwickshire Trading Standards can confirm that Newstone Premier Driveways is not based at the address and the occupant has no connection at all with the trader.

Trading Standards Officers have been unable to find a valid address for Newstone Premier Driveways.

Improvements to homes and gardens can be expensive. If work isn’t up to scratch consumers need to be able to contact the trader to get things put right. When choosing a trader, Warwickshire Trading Standards Service advise the following:

·        Go on recommendation if at all possible and use traders family or friends have been happy with.
·        Ensure the business has a genuine address – find out how long they have been there for.
·        Ask to see examples of their work and verify it with the householder.
·        Get everything written down - don’t rely on spoken agreements.
·        Don’t buy from the first trader who comes to your door or be rushed in to making a quick decision - seek quotes from reputable local traders.

Kineton Sports & Social Club - Theft

Sometime between Midnight and 07:40 today thieves cut the chain on the gate and broke into the equipment shed on the drive. Numerous items were stolen including an expensive and large gang mower plus tools and and an expensive mower for maintaining bowling greens.
The thieves would have needed a low loader/trailer to take away the gang mower.
Did anyone see or hear anything suspicious overnight.

Trading Standards Update - 04/05/2011

04/05/2011 Computer 'Update' Scam

Warwickshire Trading Standards are again advising householders to beware of unexpected telephone calls, which appear to come from outside the UK, from people requesting remote access to your PC to 'update' it. Under no circumstances should you ever give anyone you don't know or trust access to your PC. Giving someone access to your PC may enable them to infect it with viruses and other malware or place on to it new programs for which they may later attempt to make a charge! In addition you may also risk the loss of confidential personal or financial data.

04/05/2011 Bogus 'Police' Publication

Warwickshire Trading Standards Service has been alerted by Warwickshire Police to a publication scam. A Bedworth resident reported that he was contacted by a company offering advertising space in a 'police' publication, police logos and car signage for £150. Bogus publishing firms offer advertising in 'safety' type magazines which have little or no circulation and so are useless for advertising. They use high pressure sales techniques to get a sale and pursue those who owe money aggressively.

Murder investigation into death of Ding family - Suspect information and missing vehicle

Dear All,
Ref: A1/CMS/1499/2011
Northamptonshire Police have released the image of a man that we wish to speak to in connection with the murder of a family of four in Pioneer Close, Wootton, Northampton.

Below are the images that have been released.

Anxiang Du

Missing Vehicle - BG60 PMO

Officers attended the property on Sunday 1 May, when the bodies were discovered.
At a press conference today, held at Northamptonshire police headquarters, Detective Superintendant Glyn Timmins confirmed officers were looking for 52 year old Anxiang Du, a businessman from the West Midlands area.
Mr Du is described as 5ft 9ins tall and of slim build. He is believed to live in Coventry and work in Birmingham.
He was last seen wearing a white baseball cap, brown waist length coat, grey trousers, a blue woollen top, black leather shoes and carrying a rucksack.
Mr Du is believed to run a business in the Pavilion shopping centre in Birmingham, however there may have been a possible sighting of him in the Pallasades shopping centre on Friday 29 April. Mr Du was reported missing by family members to the police on Friday 29 April when he is believed to have left for work at approximately 10.30am.
Detective Superintendant Glyn Timmins, said:
“We are anxious to trace Mr Du and would urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the police. We are not clear as to Mr Du’s state of mind, in particularly as he is believed to have left a suicide note at the store shortly before his disappearance. We believe this attack was targeted to this specific family and not a random attack, however we would urge the public not to approach him and to contact us on 999 or 0800 096 1011. We believe Mr Du is connected to the family through business associations.”
It is also confirmed that a post mortem examination revealed that the four people had died as a result of stab wounds, inflicted by a knife, which officers were trying to locate.
Detective Superintendant Glyn Timmins, said:
“So far we have been unable to locate family members in order to formally ID the deceased members. However, we strongly believe that they are the Ding family residing at that property, consisting of 46 year old father Jifing Ding (known locally as Jeff), 47 year old mother Ge Chui (known locally as Helen), 18 year old daughter Xing Ding (known locally as Nancy) and 12 year old daughter Alice Ding. We are also keen to locate the missing silver five door Vauxhall Corsa, registration number BG60 PMO, which was hired by the family but has not been seen since Friday. The vehicle may be with Mr Du and we would ask members of the public to neither approach the vehicle nor Mr Du, but to report the sighting immediately to the police”
Forensic teams are expected to remain at the property this week as evidence is gathered. A team of more than 60 officers including forensic officers continue to investigate the quadruple murder and search for evidence.
